Book to Screen Vampires

I don’t know about you, but I both love and hate when books I’ve read get turned into movies or television shows. Honestly, if I had a choice, I actually prefer television shows because I tend to binge. I always want more. I love it because, as I said, I always want more. I hate it because I immediately have anxiety about how the director or screenwriters are going to bastardize my vision of the characters. However, sometimes, they get it right.

So, tell me – who was your favorite book to screen vampires? Here are mine.

Eric Northman – Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire Series – portrayed by Alexander Skarsgard in True Blood

Okay, so this is a bit of a cop-out. I only read the first book of this series but I loved the show. I picked Eric because I love Alexander Skarasgard and the way he played Eric. I found his portrayal to be a bit colder than the one Charlaine Harris depicted in her books, which I appreciated as a foil to Bill Compton’s warmth.

Louis de Pointe du Lac – Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles – portrayed by Brad Pitt in a film by the same name. Anne Rice our patron saint of vampires.

I thought Brad Pitt did a fabulous job keeping true to Louis’s pain in this movie. The suffering and the hard choices Lestat forced upon him. Although, yes, I could totally see why it could be seen as whining to those who viewed it as a gift. There is something about the tormented hero though, isn’t there? The last I read, AMC had the rights to the Vampire Chronicles series, but that was back in May 2020. Does anyone know what’s going on with that?

Damon Salvatore – The Vampire Diaries – portrayed by Ian Somerhalder in the television show of the same name. Author L.J. Smith.

Not going to lie. Another cop-out. I don’t enjoy YA, so I haven’t read the series. However, I do love me some Ian Somerhalder and I watched the shit out of this show. I have loved him since I saw him in the “Ian Somerhalder.” His eyes, oh Lord have mercy, his eyes. I have a thing for damaged bad boys. So, how does The Damon of TV compare to Damon of the books? Can anyone tell me?

Blade – Blade – portrayed by Wesley Snipes in the movie of the same name

I never read the comics, but these movies – whew. The concept was even amazing. That said, from my research, the comics version of Blade is that he was a human and it’s only the movie version that has him a day walking vampire. However, I am keeping him on my list because it’s my list damnit and I can do these things.

Okay, now it’s your turn. Tell me your favorite book to screen vampires.
